Forklift Batteries and Information

Forklift batteries come in two main types: lead acid and nickel iron. These batteries are rechargeable and can last, when cared for properly, up to seven years. Lead acid forklift batteries are like the ones in your cars, but larger, heavier and stronger of course. They have a per-charge life of approximately 5 to 6 hours, or enough for one eight-hour shift, before they have to be recharged. In recent years, these batteries have become much more efficient, with higher output and shorter recharge times.

Recharging forklift batteries is a simple enough task, but check with manufacturer’s instructions and requirements before trying anything on your own. Some forklift batteries are heavy enough to require cranes to change and recharge them, while other recharge in the lift itself. While used forklift batteries are available for purchase; they may not be the best or safest choice. Since batteries are designed to wear out, buying a used one will simply mean your battery will not last as long as a new one and the savings are not significant enough to make it worth your while. Sometimes, however, a used forklift battery can work for short-term use, especially if cared for well or if used as a back up part for emergencies or short term use.
