What to look for in Lift Trucks

Lift TruckThe terms lift trucks and forklifts are used interchangeably. Both words describe the same thing, a piece of machinery that lifts and moves large items on metal tongs or forks. Lift trucks are a big investment for any business, but essential. Lift trucks come with a variety of options to suit your lifting needs. Whether it is for rugged, heavy-duty outdoor use or lighter duty indoor warehouses, there is a lift truck available for you. Some options to consider when looking at lift trucks are:

Tires: There are two types of tires, cushion and pneumatic. Pneumatic tires are inflated with compressed air, much like the tires on your car, and are best for outdoor use, where the ground may be uneven and rough. Cushion tires are a solid tires of rubber, they perform best indoors on smooth, flat floors.
Safety features: Each state has different regulations on what they require, so check before you buy. These features include back-up alarms, flashing lights, headlights and brake lights.
Sideshift and tilt: A lift truck that lets you move the loads from left to right, and tilt back and forwards makes for more accurate placement of loads. While not essential to the function of the forklift, it is a convenience.
Comfort controls: Comfort controls, or ergonomics, are definitely optional, but they are the most appreciated. An adjustable seat and easy to reach controls can make a great deal of difference to the operator sitting behind the wheel for eight hours a day.
Width: A lift truck is only useful if it can fit down your aisles and move easily. Measuring your aisle width before you shop will determine if you can use a standard lift, or if you need one for narrow spaces. Several companies specialize in narrow lifts
Interchangeable fork attachments: You can get attachments to let your lift handle odd shaped loads, such as lumber, pipes or drums.
